Sergio Bunin Joins Zavala Civitas as Regional Director for Latin America Insurance

Sergio Bunin is a seasoned Property & Casualty (P&C) Insurance and Reinsurance executive with a deep understanding of the Latin American and Mexican market. His career is marked by successful turnarounds, strategic acquisitions of insurance companies, and transformative bancassurance deals in the region. Sergio’s expertise extends to conducting mergers of insurance companies and his innovative approaches have driven growth and dividends for the organizations he’s been associated with.

What sets Sergio apart is his ability to navigate the complexities of the insurance and reinsurance industry while fostering values of empowerment, transparency, respect, and diversity. Fluent in Spanish, English, German, and Portuguese, Sergio´s academic background is impressive. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and an MBA in International Marketing and Finance.  

His professional journey has been marked by significant accomplishments in the insurance and reinsurance sector. As the President of Instituto de Reaseguros, he played a crucial role in presenting the State’s Run-Off proposal to the insurance market in Argentina. During his role as the Head of Latin America at Talanx, Germany’s third-largest multi-brand insurance group, Sergio acquired companies in Latin America, Mexico, and Spain. Sergio’s negotiation skills and strategic vision were instrumental in closing deals in countries such as Chile, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, and Spain.  

Moreover, Sergio initiated and successfully closed a public share repurchase offer (OPA), granting Talanx International full control of its Chilean operations. His involvement in selecting CEOs to manage companies and members of the Board for supervisory roles showcased his keen eye for talent. Subsequently, as the Chief Executive Officer of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions in Mexico, Sergio demonstrated exceptional leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, fostering a sense of community and care.

Sergio’s strategic decisions translated into declaring dividends after years of losses while expanding the company’s presence into other states in Mexico. His innovative approach, including the development of new products and an app to reach small and medium-sized enterprises, earned Swiss Re Corporate Solutions recognition as the most innovative insurance company in Mexico.

Between 2001 and 2007, Sergio was a full-time entrepreneur in a start-up premium distillery and a trusted consultant to wine industry investors. He established the country’s first high-end distillery, earning international recognition with awards and special mentions for the exceptional quality and excellence of some of its products.
